What is Slew Drive?
A slew drive is an integrated rotary actuator that combines slewing bearing, gearbox, drive motor and sealing system in one compact unit. It supports 360° continuous rotation and can withstand axial load, radial load and tilting moment at the same time. How Do Slew Drives Work?
Slew drives are compact, integrated rotary actuators designed to convert input power into precise, controlled 360° rotation—while supporting heavy loads and resisting axial, radial forces, and tilting moments. Their operation relies on a synergistic combination of gear mechanics, bearing support, and sealing systems, with key components that each play a critical role in functionality. The core parts include the worm shaft, a helical-threaded input component connected to a motor or hydraulic drive; the worm wheel (or slew ring), a large ring-shaped gear with teeth that mesh with the worm shaft; four-point contact or double row bearings integrated into the slew ring; a housing that encases the gear system to protect internal components; and a self-locking mechanism inherent to helical worm gear designs.
Slew drives follow a simple, efficient power transmission sequence: first, an electric motor, hydraulic motor, or manual crank delivers rotational force to the worm shaft. Next, the helical thread of the worm shaft engages with the teeth of the worm wheel, converting the worm’s rotational motion into the worm wheel’s orbital rotation. The gear ratio—typically ranging from 30:1 to 100:1—determines the output speed and torque. As the slew ring rotates, integrated bearings distribute loads evenly. Finally, the self-locking feature stops the slew ring from rotating if power is lost, while sealing systems (IP55/IP65) protect against harsh environments.
