What is a slewing ring bearing? It is a large-diameter bearing that lets a crane, excavator, solar tracker or turntable rotate while carrying axial, radial and tilting loads. Because it sits at the center of the machine, a bad one is expensive to replace.
The sourcing risk is simple. You compare two quotes from a slewing ring bearing supplier, pick the lower number, and then find freight, crating, inspection reports and rejects on later invoices. This guide gives you a model to put every quote on the same basis before you decide.
Why Unit Price Alone Misleads Buyers
A unit price is only the start of the cost. Two quotes can look 10% apart and still end up in the opposite order once you add everything between the factory gate and your assembly line.
In three decades of specifying bearings and drives for heavy equipment, I have seen the same pattern. The cheaper quote often leaves out something the buyer assumed was included. Check these items first.
| Quote item | What to confirm | Why it changes the total |
|---|---|---|
| Trade term | EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP | Decides who pays inland freight, ocean freight and duties |
| Gear and raceway specs | Hardening depth, module, precision grade | A lower spec can cut price but raise failure risk |
| Inspection | Report type and who pays for it | Third-party checks add cost when they are not included |
| Packaging | Crate type, rust protection | Weak packing causes corrosion and damage in transit |
| Validity and payment | Quote expiry, deposit share | Steel price changes and cash tied up both cost money |
The Landed-Cost Model: Eight Cost Lines From Unit Price to Downtime
Landed cost is the full price to get a working part to your dock and keep it working. Use one spreadsheet row per quote and fill every line. If a supplier cannot give a figure, enter your own estimate and mark it as a risk.
| Cost line | How to calculate | Common trap |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Unit price | Price per set × quantity | Comparing different trade terms or specs |
| 2. Tooling and fixtures | One-time charges ÷ planned order volume | Tooling hidden in a "setup" line |
| 3. Inspection | Report fees + any third-party audit or witness cost | Assuming a dimensional report is included |
| 4. Packaging | Crate, rust-preventive wrap, pallet fees | Standard carton quoted for a heavy ring |
| 5. Freight and insurance | Inland + ocean or air + cargo insurance | Quoting freight for volume, not actual weight |
| 6. Duties and fees | Customs value × duty rate, plus brokerage and port charges | Using a guessed rate instead of your broker's HS-code answer |
| 7. Rejects | Expected defect rate × replacement cost, including return freight | Ignoring the cost of a rejected set arriving late |
| 8. Downtime exposure | Days of delay × daily cost of the idle line or machine | Leaving it at zero because it is hard to measure |
Total landed cost per set = (lines 1 through 8 combined) ÷ number of usable sets. Divide by usable sets, not ordered sets. That one change makes rejects visible.
Limit of the model: lines 7 and 8 are estimates. Use your own history, set a range, and show the buyer's committee both the low and high case.
Worked Example: Two Quotes for the Same Bearing
The numbers below are illustrative assumptions for a 10-set order. They are not our prices. Replace them with your own quotes, freight rates and duty rate.
| Cost line (10 sets) | Quote A: low price, EXW | Quote B: higher price, FOB, report included |
|---|---|---|
| Unit price | $10,000 | $11,200 |
| Tooling | $800 | $0 |
| Inspection | $600 | $0 |
| Packaging | $500 | $0 |
| Inland freight to port | $700 | $0 |
| Ocean freight and insurance | $1,400 | $1,400 |
| Duties and fees (assumed 5%) | $500 | $560 |
| Reject allowance (3% vs 1%) | $300 | $112 |
| Downtime exposure | $400 | $150 |
| Total landed cost | $15,200 | $13,422 |
Quote A is $1,200 cheaper on the unit line. After the other seven lines, it costs about 13% more in total. Per set, that is $1,520 against roughly $1,342.
This does not mean the higher price always wins. If Quote A's supplier gives you free crating and a verified reject history, the gap closes. The model tells you which question to ask next.

Evidence to Ask For Before You Trust Any Quote
Reject and downtime lines are only as good as the evidence behind them. Ask each supplier for documents, not promises. Then give the lower-risk supplier a lower reject estimate in your model.
- Quality system certificate. We hold ISO 9001:2015 certification, and factory audit reports are available on request.
- Measurement records. Ask whether each ring gets a coordinate-measuring check. Every bearing we ship passes CMM three-coordinate inspection and dynamic load testing. See our Slew Drive Quality Control page for the process.
- Regional marking. For European delivery, ask for CE marking status of the specific product. We offer CE marking for the European market.
- Repeat-order proof. A buyer who reorders has usually accepted the quality. Ask each supplier for one or two comparable references.
- Warranty text. Read it for scope, not just duration.
One caution. A certificate shows a quality system exists. It does not guarantee that every batch matches your drawing, so keep your own incoming inspection plan.
What a Slewing Ring Bearing Supplier Like Luoyang Slewring Bearing Co., Ltd. Can Document

On unit price, our localized German-standard SE/WE series slew drives, offered in P0-P4 precision grades, save 30-50% versus imported brands while matching first-tier performance parameters. That figure compares unit cost for that series only. Run it through the full model for your own destination.
Cases that show the model in use
These are real orders. We list product and quantity only, not their cost outcomes.
- A Houston, Texas engineering machinery manufacturer ordered 100 units of SEA21-125-25HR(2) for slewing platforms, and 150 units of WED17-104-25HR double worm slew drives for heavy-duty wheel steering.
- A South Korean port equipment manufacturer placed a 20-unit repeat order of WEA9-62-25HR single worm slew drives for port cranes, with ≤0.15° tracking precision and IP65 sealing.
- A Netherlands material handling manufacturer bought 50 units of WEA9-62-25HR for truck-mounted loader cranes.
For heavy-duty crane and excavator rings, see our Three-row Roller Slewing Bearings. For worm-driven rotation and self-locking, look at the Worm Gear Slew Drive range.
Common Mistakes in Quote Comparison
- Mixing trade terms. An EXW quote next to a CIF quote is not a comparison. Convert both to the same point, usually your dock.
- Zeroing out rejects. Zero is never the right estimate. Use your history, then adjust for supplier evidence.
- Skipping specs. Check material grade, hardening, precision grade and seal rating line by line. A cheaper ring may not be the same ring.
- Ignoring payment terms. A 50% deposit on a 10-week order costs real money in tied-up cash.
- Treating a sample as proof of the batch. A good sample shows capability. It does not replace batch inspection records.
Terms to Agree Before You Place the Order
Some terms are already supplied: MOQ, warranty and the standard production cycle. Other terms are matters we should settle in writing for your order. They are not fixed company practice, and they change by project.
- Specification and drawing revision. Name the drawing number and revision on the order.
- Trade term and delivery point. Choose one Incoterm and name the port.
- Acceptance criteria. Agree which measurements and reports prove a set is good.
- Responsibility for transit damage. Decide who insures the cargo and who files claims.
- Warranty scope. Confirm how the 2-year warranty and free replacement for confirmed manufacturing defects apply to your duty cycle.
This list does not cover misuse, wrong lubrication or overload outside the design rating. Put your load data in the RFQ so the design rating is clear.
